Generations of Unforgettable Taste
PON ZEN LEE (since 1938)
As a child, I spent countless joyful hours playing in my grandfather’s tea plantation. Towering grasses grew higher than the tea trees, while tea green leafhoppers danced in the summer air—flitting east and west, salivating on tender leaves. Their bites left the tea leaves withered, and I worried they would ruin the harvest. Yet my grandfather, cherishing things and frugal, refused to discard the insect-bitten leaves. Instead, he made them into tea, brewing a cup for me to taste. To my surprise, the tea was sweeter, more fragrant—infused fruity, honeyed richness.
Only later did I realize: these tiny creatures, through their delicate touch, had transformed the tea, giving it a new soul. That unforgettable taste remains etched in my heart. My grandfather smiled as he told me, “This is nature’s gift, a blessing from heaven. We must cherish it and pass it down through generations.”
